Many hours, efforts, dollars and brainpower go into pet food companies’ and regulatory bodies’ efforts to ensure that products on the market are safe and healthy for pets. For example, compliance to the Food Safety Modernization Act constitutes a significant portion of safety and quality managers’ responsibilities. That includes preparing for inspections by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its partnering state agencies.

While numerous consumer surveys over the past several years have shown pet owners becoming more interested in alternative proteins and various functional ingredients in the pet foods they buy, a new report indicates education may be in order for some people to consider feeding their beloved pets these substances.

In a recent blog post, I speculated about why some pet food and human food mergers turn out well – think General Mills buying Blue Buffalo, plus Mars’ and Nestle Purina’s many acquisitions of smaller pet food players – while others, well, don’t. J.M Smucker’s divesture of many of its pet food and treat brands earlier this year, followed by meat giant BRF’s plan to sell its pet food businesses less than two years after acquiring them, prompted my ruminations.

Pet food producer prices stabilize, retail prices still up

When it comes to ongoing pet food inflation, there’s good news and bad news. The good: In the U.S., pet food producer prices have declined year over year (YOY), with an increase of 10.5% in February 2023 over February 2022. That was down from January 2023’s 12.5% YOY increase. The bad news is that pet food retail prices remain stubbornly high, not only in the U.S. but also in many other markets. The U.S. February 2023 YOY figure was 15.2%, following 15.1% in January and 15.2% in December 2022.
